Course Description

Course Profile

The master programme in Environmental Management is a response to contemporary civilization challenges, including the need to change production and consumption patterns as well as models and forms of management in business and public organisations in accordance with the paradigm of sustainable development. These challenges imply changes in the labour markets, where specialists with professional and interdisciplinary knowledge in the field of environmental protection and environmental management are increasingly sought after.

“Ecology” has recently become a buzz word both in science and in practice, yet it is often misinterpreted and misunderstood. This results in non-specialists becoming involved with this problem, often leading to suboptimal decisions being taken regarding the use of environmental resources as well as the directions of development of organisations, which often take the form of “greenwashing”. In such a situation, educating staff professionally prepared to manage organisations while taking into account environmental aspects as an integral part of the overall management system – is a necessity.

The study programme covers the challenges, problems and anthropogenic threats to the natural environment, provides knowledge about modern environmental protection solutions and the contemporary paradigm of development and management of organisations of various types (business, public sector, social) and different level of complexity, and finally develops the ability to organise activities focused on environmental aspects and use of modern environmental management instruments.

The graduates are expected to:

1) have an awareness and knowledge of environmental problems in the organisation;

2) identify environmental aspects in the activities of any organisation;

3) make decisions on the directions of development of organisations, recognising the effects on the natural environment (internalisation);

4) design the structure of the organisation in a way that allows optimising consumption of natural resources and reducing the physical pressure on the environment in accordance with the prevention rule;

5) develop and implement an environmental management system integrated with the overall management system of the organisation; select instruments and tools for solving environmental problems in organisations.
