Course Description

Course Profile

The major is offered under the MSc in Geography degree programme.

The main idea of education in the field of geography is to acquire knowledge in physical and socio-economic geography. The students learn to understand and interpret the proper functioning of the environment in space and time, to use the results of analyses and information about natural and anthropogenic phenomena or processes on a local and global scale. They discover the interdependencies between elements of the natural environment and human activity, learn to use databases, learn about modern methods of cartographic imaging using Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

The curriculum includes geoecology, regional geography of the world, meteorology and climatography, soil science, geomorphology and many, many more. The possibility of laboratory and field classes during holiday months in Poland and abroad is an interesting way to liven up the studies.

Education Requirements

Essential documents required from candidates for studies:

1. A Bachelor's, Engineer’s or Master’s degree diploma, including the supplement with grades (document that entitles candidate to start studying at graduate level in the country where the document was issued). Document issued abroad must be legalized or possess an apostille stamp.

2. A confirmation that diploma issued abroad entitles the owner to apply for graduate programmes in the country where it was issued – in justified cases.

3. In case of documents issued in languages other than Polish and English – certified translation into Polish made by a court translator from the official list of the Polish Ministry of Justice

Other Requirements

Basic qualification criteria for the programme:

Graduates of higher education studies with a bachelor's, engineer’s, master's degree or equivalent obtained in a study programme of geography or related disciplines shall be admitted

to the study programme within the limit of places.

In the case of graduates of study programmes other than geography, the decision on admission to the recruitment procedure shall be made by the Faculty Recruitment Committee based on the analysis of the curriculum and the learning outcomes obtained from the completed studies.

Admission for studies shall be a two-stage process.

Stage 1:

Submission of a document confirming an English language knowledge of at least B2 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. In the absence of that document, the applicant's language skills will be checked during the interview to check the level of language skills.

The interview shall be scored on a scale of 0 to 20 points. A positive result from the interview shall be a minimum score of 10 points.

The receipt by the candidate of fewer than 10 points or the absence in the test shall disqualify the candidate from the entire admission procedure.

Stage 2:

Candidates admitted to stage two shall be qualified based on the sum obtained from the final grade on the diploma and grade point average (according to the place on the ranking list).

Detailed qualification criteria will be available in the Online Candidate Registration System (https://irk2.us.edu.pl/en-gb/) – please check them before applying. Application starts on June 3rd, 2024.
