Course Description

Course Profile

The student of the unique Balkan Studies gains practical knowledge of two regional languages – one is Slavonic chosen from Bulgarian, Macedonian, and Serbian (level B1) and one non-Slavonic from among Albanian, Greek, Romanian and Turkish (level B1). The practical knowledge of those languages is supplemented with comprehensive studies of Balkan contemporary literature and current cultural, social, political and economic transformations in the Balkans.

The interdisciplinary character of the programme, including research methods of language and literature studies, ethnology, history and political science gives knowledge about the lingustic, ethnic and political conditions, including the identity issues, and their current forms in Balkan countries. The specific merger of those four realms of science leads to the attainment of skills necessary to synthesizing and applying those theories in practice. Students learn to think in terms of the dialectics of analysis and synthesis, to formulate and verify hypotheses and evaluate the current cultural, politic and economic phenomena in the Balkans.

The graduate will be highly competent in cultural and social analysis. Prospective jobs include national and self-government administration, national institutions, European Union authorities, cultural, educational, publishing institutions, foundations, economic institutions and mass media.

A graduate of the unique Balkan studies will be well prepared to undertake research and enter PhD studies.

Education Requirements

B.A. in arts, philology or social sciences with very good knowledge of English (IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 570/230 computer-based).
